Best of Both Worlds – The Story

First steps When I started blogging a few years back, the easiest name to remember was www.blogger.com (AKA: blogspot). The article where I read about blogs did mention WordPress as well as some other name. But I chose to try my luck on www.blogger.com. Few years and a hundred odd posts later, I decided that blogger was not challenging enough and I decided to dip my toes in www.wordpress.com. But as soon as I tried it out, I realized that it was much more restrictive than blogspot. I continued posting on blogspot until my earlier attempt at webdesign paid off. The Reward When I tried my hand at having my own website, the hottest name was Geocities (RIP). When they shut down their services and took off all the websites that were hosted offline, Dream Host offered me 2 years of free hosting along with a free domain name. And …

Zemanta

One of the browser plugins that I have come across that makes your blog posts, e-mails rich in content is Zemanta. You can get it as a bookmarklet as well as a plugin. I prefer the plugin as it will recognize the page that I am on, new post page in WordPress, Email compose page etc, and adds content to a side bar based on what I am typing. It will also detect keywords in the post so that you can insert links to those posts automatically. I have been using Zementa for a while now, but never thought about posting about it until I came across this post from Rose. Keyword linking: This is probably one of the best feature of Zemanta. I post on various topics, but that does not mean those who are reading it will know about it. They might want to find out more about …

Lofty Thoughts and Simple Living

That was a phrase from my childhood. If my memory serves me right, my father said that was the principle by which Mahatma Gandhi lived. I had forgotten all about it, and something made me think of it today. Google did not turn up such a phrase, which is strange, because someone would have put those 5 words together and it should have been indexed by Google. I am certain that those words have made a huge impact in my life. I may not lead a simple life and my thoughts might not be lofty, but I wish… At no point in my life did I lead a simple life, even when I thought I did. I always wanted something more, just like Oliver Twist. You cease to live a simple life when the things that you acquire are not for your needs, but your wants. As any marketing student …

The Right Thing To Do

I have been  bit busy during the last few weeks, and was catching up on the blogs that I follow when I came across the following. Today, the shadow called my name. “Sit down and visit for the day…” I fought the urge to sit and chat. It whined and wept; it pranced and danced, weaving words like a bazaar seller on the street. “Sit down my dear, tarry here my dear and rest your weary bones. Put your feet up, Take a break, a very long break.” “God has placed in each soul a true guide to the light, but man struggles to find life outside himself, unaware that the life he is seeking is within him.” Kahlil Gibran “People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a …

Slaves to Convenience

There are quite a few shops that are open at night where I work. I usually frequent one of those shops to get my daily doze of tea (4-5 cups) or coffee. There is another shop right next to it which my friend prefer. The service at that shop is faster than at mine, mostly because they have tea already prepared and ready to be served in a kettle. However the pot they use to make tea makes me sick. It looks as it is 20 years old, with the amount of tea stain on it. I am not sure if the flavour they have is because of some special tea they use, or due to the accumulated flavours of various brands of tea that has stained the pot. These shops are available till about 1 in the morning. In the early hours of the morning, there are a couple …

Eternal Life

Medicine has progressed so much that people expect to live to a very ripe age. Ripe? Make it rotten. Human beings ability to count time has made it one of the most interesting topic. People love to hear how old certain person has become and they what the average age is of a city, (older the better) so that they can go and live there. We are being a race dominated by old people. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against old people. They have seen it all, and more often than not, they are wiser because of that. But how many old people do you know who are wise, as opposed to knowledgeable? How many of those old people use it to the betterment of the society? How many of them do you see telling stories, whether it is about a ghost, World War II or their childhood …
