Home Philosophy Slaves to Convenience

Slaves to Convenience

by Sunil J

There are quite a few shops that are open at night where I work. I usually frequent one of those shops to get my daily doze of tea (4-5 cups) or coffee. There is another shop right next to it which my friend prefer. The service at that shop is faster than at mine, mostly because they have tea already prepared and ready to be served in a kettle. However the pot they use to make tea makes me sick. It looks as it is 20 years old, with the amount of tea stain on it. I am not sure if the flavour they have is because of some special tea they use, or due to the accumulated flavours of various brands of tea that has stained the pot. These shops are available till about 1 in the morning. In the early hours of the morning, there are a couple of other shops a short distance from my office. I prefer the shop which is run by a family, but requires walking down a steep road and then climbing a very steep iron stairs as the shop is on the 2nd floor, but my friends prefer the one on the opposite side. They always ran out of whatever we wanted, and the food is barely edible.

I kept wondering why my friends preferred why they kept gravitating to the obviously worst shop, until I realised that it was more convenient for everyone, even if it meant the service or the quality suffered. For a while I took pride in my taste, that is, until I realised that I was using Windows instead of Linux was for the same reason, convenience. We are all slaves to it, one way or the other.

Doing what come easy shows we are settling and not committed to getting the best outcome. The problem is that once we start, it’s hard to stop… Easy out becomes our mantra and everything else must fall into place. 🙂

Agree with you on that. And I am afraid most of us do that, and many to a greater extend.
